HBO’s hits Game of Thrones and Veep won big at the 2016 Emmy Awards last night. For the second consecutive year, medical Game of Thrones took home the award for best drama while Veep won for best comedy. The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story was the big winner in the limited series category as it won for best limited series and stars Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown and Courtney B. Vance took home awards as well.
In the acting categories, there were a few great surprises as first time nominee Rami Malek took home the award for best actor in a drama for his performance on USA’sMr. Robot. Tatiana Maslany took home the award for best actress in a drama for her critically-acclaimed (and long-overdue) performance on the BBC’s Orphan Black.
Other winners included Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who took home her fifth consecutive award for her lead performance on Veep and Jeffrey Tambor, who won his second consecutive award for his leading performance on for Amazon comedy Transparent. Louie Anderson and Kate McKinnon won the awards for best supporting actor and actress in a comedy for their respective roles on FX’s Baskets and NBC’sSaturday Night Live. Both were first-time winners.
In an interesting bit of news, Game of Thrones also became a record-holder for winning more Emmy awards than any other show in primetime history, according to EW.com. In his six seasons, the show has won more awards than critically-acclaimed Emmy darlings like Frasier and The West Wing.
